How to Shop for artificial turf and artificial grass

When shopping for artificial grass, quality, price, and sustainability are some of the key factors to consider. It is important to look at the materials, manufacturing process, and warranty before purchasing. Then you can compare the price per square foot to find the best deal on the market for new turf.

With a variety of synthetic turf options available, each project will use different products that best suit your specific needs. For example – Landscape turf is low maintenance and requires no weeding, mowing, or fertilizing for homeowners to maintain; pet turf offers excellent drainage, especially when compared with natural grass; sports turf products will create an even playing surface to enhance athletic performance; playground turf is a safer and more durable option than real grass.

Whether you’re installing turf for backyards, front lawns, play areas, sports fields, stadiums, golf greens, rooftops, pet areas, or commercial landscapes, ATS has the right artificial turf products for you! No matter the application, all of our synthetic grass options are high-quality, free of pesticides, weather resistant, soft to the touch, and virtually maintenance-free. View our top selling fake grass to see which products are right for you!

    Why switch to artificial turf

Artificial grass doesn’t require typical upkeep such as watering, weeding, fertilizing, or mowing, it is a low maintenance and cost effective alternative to real grass.

Synthetic grass is also durable and will last much longer than real grass. Made with high-quality materials like polyethylene for resilience, it can withstand the test of time even when used for high impact sports, pet turf, play areas, golf greens, and extreme weather conditions.

Not only is synthetic grass long-lasting and maintenance-free, it is also completely non-toxic, and free of pesticides and harmful chemicals required to maintain a natural lawn. This makes artificial turf products the ideal choice for playground grass, athletic fields, and pet areas.

Artificial turf products might be an investment at first, but they will end up saving homeowners and business owners money in the long run. Contact us today to upgrade your grass lawn today!

    How to install artificial grass

Installing astroturf is a great way to improve your home’s appearance and increase property value. Artificial grass will reduce maintenance, saving homeowners time and money. Here is a DIY guide on how to install artificial turf for any grass lawn.

    1. Turf Preparation: Roll the turf out over a clean, flat surface making sure that all the synthetic grass blades are going in the same direction. Let the artificial turf sit in the sun for a few hours so the fibers can relax.
    2. Turf Cutting: Mark the back of the turf where you intend to cut it. Cut the turf roll using a carpet or razor knife. If there are any overlapping areas, trim them until they are as close as possible without touching them. Clean up the turf to match the edges and borders.
    3. Turf Seaming: Mark the areas where you want the seam to go with a chalk line. Cut both edges of the rolls as close to the second tuft row as possible. Fold the edges of each turf roll and place the 12” seaming tape on the chalk lines.
    4. Apply your adhesive to the tape or surface. Wait 3-5 minutes before laying down the edges. Allow 10-15 minutes before pressing onto the seam. Wait another 25-35 minutes and repeat.
    5. Perimeter: To secure the perimeter, place your galvanized sod staple of 6” galvanized nails every 6”-10” around the edges.
    6. Infill: Apply the crumb rubber infill evenly over the turf area. Do this one layer at a time, until you are out of infill or have reached your desired level of infill.

    Benefits of artificial grass

Artificial turf has many benefits over natural grass – Fake grass is quickly becoming the top choice for residential and commercial landscaping projects. High-quality artificial turf products will have a realistic look and feel while remaining lusciously green all year long. No more dry patches, muddy puddles, or stained grass ruining your lawn.

Artificial grass is also a more sustainable option and essentially maintenance-free requiring little to no lawn care. Say goodbye to weekly watering, mowing, and fertilizing when you make the switch to synthetic turf. The only maintenance step we recommend is to hose off the turf once in a while to clean away any dirty spots and prevent odor buildup from pets.

Synthetic grass is a safer alternative to real grass. Our products are free from harmful pesticides and completely non-toxic. All Artificial Turf Supply products are engineered with a safety first approach, creating an even playing surface and soft-forgiving feel to prevent injuries.

Because artificial turf can withstand impact from sports, pets, play areas, and weather elements, it will last you longer than natural grass. Once you install your turf, you no longer need to worry about resodding, reseeding, or replanting. We even include a warranty with your purchase to ensure longevity of your new turf lawn.

How to care for artificial grass

If you are lucky enough to have an artificial lawn, you’ll want to make sure that it stays looking like new turf for years to come. Here are a few simple tips on how to maintain your green turf:

    1. Sweep or brush the surface of the artificial turf and infill to remove any unwanted dirt or fallen leaves every 3 months or so,
    2. Regularly pick up any pet waste or unwanted debris, especially for pet turf.
    3. Lightly hose down messy, faded, or worn areas with water to prevent odor and debris build up.
    4. If the turf looks faded or worn, use a garden hose with moderate pressure to give it a good clean.
    5. For stubborn spots that won’t come out with a quick rinse, use laundry detergent and scrub lightly to clean the area.
    6. If you notice any holes or tears in the turf area, you can repair them with a patching kit.

Where to use artificial turf or artificial grass

    Landscaping

Artificial grass is a great option for lawns and landscaping because it is realistic, soft to the touch, and stays green all year round. Homeowners across the nation are making the switch from natural grass to synthetic grass because it is easier to maintain. Our landscape turf products provide a flawless lawn that will increase property value and curb appeal without mowing, weeding, or watering required.

This high quality landscaping series delivers cost-saving advantages of synthetic grass while maintaining a luxurious and realistic aesthetic. Made with durable fibers, various yard colors, and toxic-free materials, artificial grass makes it easy to customize your lawn and keep it looking fresh for years to come.

    Dogs and pets

Pet owners love artificial turf fields because they are durable and completely non-toxic. With stain and odor resistant properties, they are a low maintenance alternative to natural grass that end up lasting longer than most real grass lawns.

Because artificial grass fields use crumb rubber infill instead of dirt, they are a completely mud-free zone! That means no more muddy paws tracking dirt into your clean home.

    Artificial grass vs. natural grass

There are many pros and cons to both artificial turf and natural grass. Artificial grass products are made to look and feel like real grass without requiring all the maintenance, but some people say that synthetic turf looks and feels a bit stiff.

Also, installing turf is an investment. But when you look at the long-term cost savings from installing artificial turf, it’s well worth it in the end.

Because synthetic grass is an extremely low maintenance alternative to natural grass, it requires minimal water to maintain and no pesticides, mowing, or weeding. Plus, it will stay green throughout the whole year, no matter the seasonal or climate conditions unlike natural grass.

Learn more: Artificial grass vs real grass

The cost of artificial grass vs. traditional grass

The initial cost of artificial grass products is significantly higher than that of natural grass. But, the long term savings from installing turf outweighs that upfront cost.

For one, artificial turf does not need to be replaced nearly as often as real grass lawns. If you take care of your artificial grass lawn, it should remain in good condition for a long time. Natural grass lawns are difficult to maintain and need to be replaced frequently.

Synthetic grass is extremely low maintenance, especially when compared to real grass, which saves homeowners both time and money. Switching from a traditional grass lawn to fake turf can save homeowners 50 gallons per square foot every year, which ultimately adds up to 15,000 – 50,000 gallons of water per year depending on the size of your yard.

The cost of both artificial turf and natural grass varies depending on quality. Artificial Turf Supply is a wholesale supplier that provides the highest quality synthetic turf products at the lowest possible price for residential & commercial landscaping, pet turf areas, athletic fields, playground grass areas, stadiums, golf greens, and rooftops. The quality of artificial grass matters if you care about the longevity of your new turf.

The benefits of artificial grass over traditional grass

The benefits of artificial grass over traditional grass lawns are extensive. Installing turf means that you never have to worry about heavy duty maintenance tasks such as watering, mowing, weeding, fertilizing, and spraying your grass lawn with harmful pesticides.

Fake grass can thrive in any geographic location because it does not rely on climate conditions to remain fully green and luscious. Real grass needs specific weather conditions to thrive and ends up needing to be replaced often if not cared for properly.

Artificial grass is also non-toxic, making it a safe choice for families with children and pets. Synthetic turf is great for any pet area because, unlike real grass, it prevents digging and is a mud free zone. Lawns with a fake grass and infill system provide maximum drainage so owners can take their pets to do their business without stressing.

Our playground turf is ideal for any play area because it is certified lead-free, soft between the toes, and mom approved. Our softest, and safest products yet create an even playing surface without holes or slippery areas.

Many are making the switch from real grass to artificial turf because they are engineered to withstand the test of time – All of our artificial grass products are durable, cool to the touch, resistant to staining and fading, antimicrobial, and can handle most weather conditions.

Pros and cons of artificial grass

There are both pros and cons to artificial grass lawns. Some people prefer the look of natural grass and don’t like that the initial cost of artificial grass can be expensive. However, the long term savings tend to outweigh the upfront costs of installing turf.

Others don’t like that artificial turf products can be hot to touch, especially in direct sunlight during the hotter months. We recommend shading your turf areas with an umbrella or awning, especially when facing hot weather conditions. You can also lay a blanket down to make you and your pets more comfortable when needed.

Though our turf products are antimicrobial and designed to withstand strong smells, if not cleaned properly, turf can hold odor. Especially if you have pets, it is important to regularly clean your artificial grass area with a light rinse from your hose.

How to choose the right artificial grass

There are a lot of artificial grass products on the market, so it can be difficult to know which one is the right choice for you. We are here to help make that decision stress-free!

The first thing to consider is what the main purpose of the lawn is – lawns and landscaping, pet turf, playground turf, outdoor sports turf, indoor sports turf, gym turf, putting green turf, or rooftop turf. This is an important first step because each application has benefits for your unique needs. If you are looking to put new turf in your home, you will want something realistic and aesthetically pleasing.

If you have pets, you will need turf that is super durable and resistant to fading. Athletic turf will have extra padding to prevent injuries. Once you determine what your functional priorities are for your lawn, the rest of the decision making process is fairly simple.

The next thing to consider is the size of the area you are planning to install your new turf. You’ll need to get the square footage and make sure to order enough turf to cover the entire area or you may end up with patchy turf that does not look natural.

When you are planning your artificial turf installation, think about what other elements will be in the area. Will there be any plants, structures, tile, etc that will need to be accounted for? All these factors will determine which turf products you select for your custom project.

Another point you will want to consider is price. Artificial grass can be expensive, but it is important to get high quality products if you want your lawn to look realistic and remain in good condition for years to come. Think about if you will be hiring a professional to install turf or if this will be a DIY project.

The turf installation process can be labor intensive, but doing it yourself is one way you can cut the cost of your project.

Learn more: How to choose the best artificial grass

The different types of artificial grass

Four main components make up the different types of artificial grass. The first is material which will dictate the quality. Most artificial grass is made out of either nylon or polyethylene. Typically polyethylene looks more realistic and is softer to the touch than nylon products.

Next you will look at height – The pile height can range from roughly 1” – 2.5” to support different applications. A shorter product might be used for golf greens and a taller product might be used for residential lawns because it looks more realistic.

The second component is the density of the fake grass. Denser products will be more durable, making them ideal for football fields, pet turf, and playgrounds. Homeowners might prefer something with low-mid density to have a more natural look.

The last thing to consider is color. When looking at green turf products, different shades will appear more natural whereas others will be more vibrant. You can customize your project by combining artificial grass products with different colors, heights, and weights.

    Multi-purpose artificial grass

Multi-purpose artificial grass is a great option for anyone seeking versatility. This type of grass works well for both indoor and outdoor use and can be installed for a variety of settings.

If you are a homeowner looking for realistic, aesthetically pleasing turf that is pet friendly, multipurpose synthetic turf would be the perfect solution for you. Many people select multipurpose fake grass because it can adapt to changes that are made to the use of your space. This ensures that your lawn has longevity and is worth the investment.

    Water savings with artificial grass

Installing artificial grass can save homeowners and business owners significant amounts of water, especially when compared to traditional landscaping. Because there is no need to water synthetic grass to keep it lush, green, and manicured, the potential water savings are immense.

Natural grass lawns typically require copious amounts of water to grow. An average sprinkler system in a residential lawn will use about 12 – 30 gallons of water per minute. Best practice to maintain green grass is to water the lawn at least 3 days per week for 30 – 35 minutes with a sprinkler system. The gallons of water add up quickly! When you switch to artificial grass, homeowners can save 15,000 – 50,000 gallons of water per year.

Artificial turf is a great grass alternative, especially in drought prone and dry climates where it is important to conserve water. Some counties are choosing to limit residential sprinkler use to save precious natural resources. Because artificial grass products are made of high quality synthetic materials that don’t lose color or texture in the sun or rain like natural grass can, a fake grass lawn will stay green even with these government regulated restrictions.

Best way to clean and maintain your artificial grass

Keeping artificial grass clean is simple, but important to maintain the quality of your lawn for years to come.

We recommend these steps to keep your lawn clean:

    1. Sweep, rake, or brush the surface of the artificial turf lawn to remove any unwanted dirt, debris, or fallen leaves.
    2. Pick up pet waste, food, or unwanted debris that has landed on your turf as needed. This step is especially important to monitor with pet turf to prevent strong odors.
    3. With a hose, lightly water any dirty or high traffic areas.
    4. For stubborn spots that won’t come out with a quick rinse, use laundry detergent and scrub lightly to clean the area.

    How long artificial turf lasts

Artificial grass lawns are a great investment because they are extremely durable and last a long time. A synthetic grass lawn has a life expectancy of 15-20 years, but it can surpass this time if it is cared for properly.

Synthetic turf has been specifically engineered for the outdoors and to withstand natural elements such as rain, snow, drought, and hot climates. Our infill options have incredible draining capabilities to prevent puddles and flooding. Plus, turf will remain green no matter the weather. Not only is artificial grass built to withstand harsh weather conditions, it is also made to withstand high impact sports, pet play, gym use, and playground activities.

    Where we’ve installed artificial grass

Artificial Turf Supply has been installed in a variety of applications including residential lawns, dog parks, dog runs in backyards, rooftops, and more. We work with business and homeowners to achieve one common goal – Create a pet friendly lawn that looks and feels like natural grass.

The Gibson’s Residence: The Gibson family reached out to us because they were interested in artificial grass for their backyard. They wanted something safe, durable, and easy to clean because they have a dog. Aesthetics were also important to them because they want to be able to enjoy their yard as well.

Our pet artificial turf products are made to look as beautiful and natural as possible so that homeowners can enjoy the upgraded space with their pets.

Vandevender Dog Pen: The Vandevender family came to us with a dog pen project for their backyard. They own a dog breeding business and wanted a clean, safe space for new puppies to roam freely.

With our artificial pet grass, their puppies can now enjoy a soft to the touch surface that is easy for the Vandevenders to maintain.

Oklahoma City Dog Park: The Oklahoma City Dog Park wanted to upgrade their facility with high-quality and affordable synthetic turf. Our pet turf was the perfect choice for this project because it is durable enough to take on a community of dogs running around without showing signs of wear and tear.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is artificial grass?

Artificial grass is a surface made from synthetic materials to look and feel like natural grass. There are many different types of synthetic grass that exist to fulfill a multitude of uses such as sports arenas, residential areas, gyms, pet areas, playgrounds, and more.

Is artificial grass during the summer too hot for dogs?

The surface temperature of synthetic turf can be up to 10 degrees hotter than the air temperature. If it’s hot outside, your pets could be getting a lot of heat exposure on the fake grass lawn.

We recommend keeping your grass out of direct sunlight, especially in the summer months. You can use umbrellas or awnings to shade your synthetic grass area and keep your pets comfortable.

Can I lay artificial grass on soil?

There is no definitive answer to this question because it depends on various factors such as the condition of the soil and type of artificial grass you are installing.

A good rule of thumb is that if the soil is sandy or loose, installing a synthetic lawn will most likely be successful. If the soil has a high level of moisture or is clay-based, then the artificial grass installation will most likely be unsteady and risk the possibility of becoming dislodged.

If you are unsure about the condition of your base surface, speak with an Artificial Turf Supply specialist for guidance.

What is the most realistic-looking artificial grass?

The most realistic artificial grass products will typically be made from polyethylene and have a deep pile height, medium density, and a natural-looking yarn color.

How much does artificial grass cost?

The average cost of artificial grass is $2 – $3 per sq.ft. Learn more about how you can finance your artificial grass project.

What are the disadvantages of artificial grass?

Synthetic grass retains heat, especially in direct sunlight, it requires regular cleaning to maintain quality and has a high upfront cost to install.

Learn more: How to clean artificial grass

Is it easy to install artificial grass?

This depends on the type of artificial turf products you are installing and the surface you’re installing it on. If you are installing it on a hard surface, it is likely to be a simple install. If you are placing it on a softer surface, such as soil, it might be a bit tricky.
