Steps to Install Your Golf Turf
Step 1: Mapping Out the Putting Green Area on Your Prepped Base
- Plan and measure where you want to place your putting holes, putting green, and fringe turf.
- Use chalk to mark where your putting holes and fringe will go.
Step 2: Placing the Putting Holes
- Use a golf hole cutter to cut a precise hole for your putting cups.
- Place your putting cup into the holes.
- Clean up any debris around the putting hole.
- Use a level to make sure the cup is sitting flat and straight.
Step 3: Adding Sand to Your Base
- Smooth out the base surface with the flat edge of a rake.
- Use a heavy roller over the entire area to make sure the base is compact.
- Distribute sand only in the area that your putting green turf will go.
- Use a heavy roller over the sand another time to make sure the surface is level.
Step 4: Putting Green and Fringe Turf Cutting
- Unroll the putting green to position it over the prepared base.
- Use a measuring tape and chalk to appropriately plan where the putting green will meet the fringe before making any cuts.
- Don’t forget to mark where your putting cups are placed.
- It’s important to measure your golf runs precisely to make sure the surface matches your play expectations.
- Carefully cut the putting green and fringe turf to fit their respective areas, leaving a slight overlap at the edges.
- When cutting for the cups, cut a little bit smaller to make for a snug fit with the cups to the green.
- Use a sharp utility knife for clean cuts.
Step 5: Golf Turf Seaming
- Use seaming tape and adhesive to join the putting green and fringe turf together.
- In today’s project, we are using self adhesive seaming tape.
- Fold back the edges of each piece of turf and place the seaming tape dull side up.
- If using standard fabric seaming tape, place the textured side face up and apply the turf glue.
- Lay down the turf edges, firmly pressing the seam area between the putting and fringe turf.
Step 6: Securing the Perimeter
- Tuck the edges of the turf into the surrounding landscape.
- Secure with stakes or landscape staples if necessary, especially on slopes.
- Make sure to secure both the perimeter and fringe, if installed.
Step 7: Edging
- Ensure the edges of the turf are securely attached and neatly trimmed.
- Consider using edge restraints or trim pieces for a clean and professional look.
Step 8: Adding Sand & Infill
- Spread sand evenly over your putting green area to create the desired firmness and speed for the putting green.
- Use a spreader to place infill along the fringe area.
- Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for infill quantity.
- Use a push broom or power brush to work the infill into the turf fibers.
- Repeat the infilling and brushing process as needed to achieve the desired playing characteristics.
Step 9: Finishing Touches
- Groom the turf with a brush or roller to ensure a smooth and consistent surface.
- Remove any excess infill or debris from the area.
